...a3crg 10
After two weeks of cancellations good weather blessed the final event of a3crg's excellent and hugely popular mid-week Open series. A restricted high quality field of just 60 riders enjoyed the opportunity on this less frequently used course.
James Rix (Crawley Wheelers) improved his PB by 2 seconds and took over a minute out of the course record with a win in 18:38. Gary Chambers (NOPINZ) was second in 18:54 and was presumably not showing too many problems having crashed (and got up to finish) in the ESCA 100 only three days earlier. Kevin Tye (VeloRefined Aerosmiths) came third in 19:05 and was fastest vet on standard. The next nine riders all went under 20 minutes. Hard luck on Howard Bayley with 20:01. He has never gone under 20 minutes and he lost crucial time after misreading a marshal's red flag at the turn. The host club's Laura Bartlett continued a fine season, being the fastest woman with 21:43. |

Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) is second with 20:33, followed by Ben Elliott (Paceline RT) with 20:52.
Jacintha Hamilton-Love (Dulwich Paragon CC) wins the ladies category with an excellent 23:03. Perennial Alan Robinson takes yet another 'first on CTT Target' vets win, beating Steve Dennis into second place. Fabien Large, clearly benefiting from some fine coaching, rides a 22:39 to win the 15-20 year old category. |

...a3crg 25
A joint win for Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) and Pat Wright (Paceline RT) as they finish ahead of Gary Chambers (NoPinz). A very good evening on a very good course resulted in lots of happy smiley faces and the end and PBs being declared.
Amazingly 7 of the riders had ridden in the seriously hot ECCA 100 just three days earlier (including the author - and I have no idea how the others did so well tonight). |
Wednesday 21 June 2017
|
Paceline RT 25
To nobody's great surprise Hamish Bond followed up his a3crg 10 by winning the Paceline RT 25 by a margin of over 5 minutes. Pete Tadros and Mark Emsley played the leading support roles.

|
... a3crg 10
There were 131 entrants for just 80 places with many looking to log a quick time. However a cold evening with strong blustery conditions slowed things right down. Just two riders went under 20 minutes with Hamish Bond (Aerocoach) finishing well ahead of in-form Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers). James Mapley (Blazing Saddles) was third in exactly 20:00.
The host club's Sarah Matthews continued to impress as she was the fastest woman rider. |

SCCU 10
Strength to strength. James Rix of Crawley Wheelers notches another win. He is ably supported by his clubmates with 3rd placed Mark Smith and 16th placed Nick Jenner securing the team prize. This success is all the more remarkable given that South Downs Bikes/CASCO Europe had the riders in 2nd, 5th and 6th places.
Ruth Summerford (womens) and Alan Robinson (vets) were the other success stories. |
Saturday 20 May 2017
|
Worthing Excelsior CC 25
Poor weather affected this event as heavy overnight and early morning rain made the roads and roundabouts slick and greasy, especially for the early riders. 43 riders opted not to start, and one of those who did start slipped off on one of the 31 roundabouts.
For a long time it looked as though Mark Smith would take the honours as he was more than a minute clear of the remainder of the field. A delay in the arrival of the times from the last few riders prolonged the suspense, and when they came in it turned out that evergreen Pete Tadros had won for the second year running. Ben Elliott just shaved third position. Ruth Summerford was more than happy with the womens prize (equal to the mens) and Angela Radden-Rutt took second prize. Keeping it in the family Theo Tadros won the prize for fastest junior. Crawley Wheelers were the team winners. |

Elite Cycling 10
Promoters notes:
Notwithstanding the dull and damp weather, the event was well supported and it was encouraging to see an increasing number of women competing. So, congratulations to each and every one of you who tested your riding abilities against the clock, some who had the satisfaction of a financial reward, others had to make do with the gratification of having tried their hardest. Naturally Mark Emsley takes the plaudits for a storming ride as well as Elise Sherwell who was the leading woman. The Vets competition was a close run affair with only twenty eight seconds covering the first three and Richard Miles only missing out on third place by one second! Similarly the Team competition which was won by Oxted CC included a fine ride by the Junior Prize Winner, Christopher Filewood, with the Elite Cycling trio only missing out on second place by four seconds. |

... a3crg 10
The 2017 series of a3crg's midweek Open events got off in fine style with an oversubscribed entry, pleasant weather and some great times by some very fast riders.
Gary Chambers (NoPinz) was one of five riders who beat the 20 minute mark, finishing ahead of James Copeland (Fareham Wheelers CC) and Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers). Maryka Sennema (Fusion RT Fierlan) clocked in at 21:59 as the fastest woman. There was a cracking ride by an Espoir as the host club's Arthur Venables came home in 21:09. |

James Rix (Crawley Wheelers) more than justified his billing as last man off, finishing over a minute clear of second placed Pete Tadros (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT). Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) completed the podium places.
Michelle Arthurs-Brennan of the hosting club was the fastest female. |
Sunday 7 May 2017

Elize Sherwell of Blazing Saddles took the womens award and GS Stella took the team prize. |

Kingston Phoenix Road Club 10
Pat Wright (Paceline RT) and Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) finish in joint first place as they are the two riders to exceed the 30 mph pace. Very imppressive on this rolling course set in the Surrey Hills. Pete Tadros (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) is another 37 seconds back.
Emma Williams of Giro Prestige is the fastest lady with a time of 26:10. |
Saturday 22 April 2017
|
Brighton Mitre Hilly 25
Well it's getting tighter! Pete Tadros extended his number of wins to 12, but as was the case on Saturday Stuart Bettis (South Downs Bikes / Casco Europe) pushed him mighty close as the two of them were well clear of the field.
George Welfare (Eastbourne Rovers CC) was third. Katerina Avramides gained the host club some honours as she was the fastest (albeit only) lady, and Mitre took the first two places in the team event. |
Easter Monday 17 April 2017
|
...a3crg 25
Cool conditions and an unexpectedly challenging breeze that many riders did not achieve the fast times that they were hoping for
But the leaderboard still had a familiar look to it as four riders exceeded 30 mph. Liam Maybank of Twickenham CC was, to nobody's surprise, the winner. James Rix of Crawley Wheelers continued with his fine run of form by finishing in second place ahead of Peter Harrison on AS Test Team. Sarah Matthews of a3crg produced a brilliant ride to win the womens' prize and it's great to see her back and riding so well after her unfortunate crash at Bentley last season. |

So, nine wins in a row thus making it ten in total for Pete Tadros of In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT. Quite remarkable.
Well done indeed to Stuart Bettis of South Downs Bikes / Casco Europe for getting as close as he did. Sam Christy of London Dynamo was third. Angela Carpenter of ...a3crg was the fastest lady. |

...a3crg Hurting on Harting -Part Deux (22.5 miles Sporting)
Much faster times than "Part Un" two years ago with course records being set in both road bike and time trial bike categories.
The road bike win was taken in 55:55 by Craig Wallington of Sarum Velo, ahead of Thomas Key (Primera-Teamjobs) and Ed Slot (Sotonia CC). Last time's winner Dave Pollard improved his 2015 time by over a minute to 59:55 but this was only enough for seventh place as 12 riders beat that benchmark time. Sotonia CC took the team prize. The time trial category was won by Tom Pritchard of Hampshire Road Club ahead of Simon McNamara (South Downs Bikes) thus reversing their 2015 positions. Tom's 52:19 was a new course record as 4 riders beat (and one equalled) Simon's 2015 benchmark of 54:25. Host club ...a3crg took the team prize. |

As expected, a win for Steve Dennis and Steve Kane - both on scratch and as a composite team. Loads of categories of awards and a great time was had by all. Very social and very pleasurable.

Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) won with an impressive time of 51:04. He was 1:15 ahead of James Rix (Crawley Wheelers). Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) was third but did have the consolation of winning the Vets award.
Madelaine Lee-Smith (Oxted CC) was the fastest lady, whilst Crawley Wheelers took the team prize. Best wishes to Stu Nisbett. He got clipped by a car that moved back into his lane as they both exited the Moorhead roundabout. He has now had stitches in his elbow and is recovering. Two other DNFs were for the rather more mundane reason of failing to sign back in at the end (a new CTT requirement this season). |

A challenge for event promoter Martin Yardley and his team as pop-up temporary traffic lights at Ringmer meant that the course had to be reduced from 23.92 miles to 20.5 miles.
The pre-race favourite Eastbourne Rovers duo of Michael Davey and Howard Shaw had to settle for second place as they finished over a minute behind their club mates Marc Townsend and George Welfare. |

Saturday’s winner, Rob Sharland, produced a long 55 which was a new course record, only to then be upstaged by team-mate, Pat Wright, in 55-04. In this event, Paceline RT had 3 riders and easily won the team award with 3rd man, Phil Ember, from GS Stella.
Two other great rides were achieved: Norwood Paragon’s Michelle Arthurs peeled 11 secs. off Alice Lethbridge’s 2015 course record with 1-8-46, and Lincoln Wheelers’ Lez Young took his trike round in 1-20-18. |

Rob Sharland produced an amazing performance to win by more than a minute and is the 2nd rider to ever do a 21 on G10/46. (Elliott Porter set the course record in 2014 with 21:28)
Conditions were tricky. The village hall flag was being blown straight out and dust was swirling around in the car park. Horsham Cycling won the 1st team award and their 4th fastest rider would have been sufficient even if Tim Peters had not been there. |
|
ESCA Hard Riders (14.9 miles, reduced from 15.06 miles)
|
Sunday 19 March 2017
|
Unexpected temporary traffic lights on the course necessitated some fast re-planning by the event promoter Peter Moon as shown here:
Temporary traffic lights went up on the course this morning due to a burst water main, and having spoken to the contractors it is highly unlikely that they will have the road repaired and lights removed before our race. The traffic lights are after 5.5 miles and at the top of the first hill (Agony Hill) of what is usually the Prime. The plan for the course now is to start at the normal START point, race for 5.4 miles to the top of Agony Hill, where your time will be recorded as Stage 1. There will then be a neutralised section (0.16 mile) whilst you pass through the traffic lights, your race will then be started in the usual fashion with another START timekeeper and pusher off, and to race to the normal FINISH where your time will be recorded as Stage 2. The two recorded times for each rider will be totalled to give an overall race time result. Well done to Pete for this. The 76 riders who were then able to compete were highly appreciative. Pete Morris of Team ASL took the win, ahead of Pete Tadros. Ruth Summerford was the ladies winner. |

Sunday 5 March 2017
|
Truly dreadful weather for this event with torrential rain and strong gusting winds greeting the riders. 15 of the 44 entrants opted not to start and a further 2 failed to complete the course.
Well done indeed to those who braved the elements and in the circumstances there were some remarkable performances. Mark Emsley of Team ASL headed a quality podium with Mark Smith of Crawley Wheelers and Dave Dent of GS Stella close behind. Dave Dent gained additional honours as winner of the 'Vets on CTT Target Time' as well as being part of the GS Stella winning team. Sarah Phelps of Crawley Wheelers took the womens' prize. |
South Downs Bikes / Casco Pet Race Team (33.81K)
A cold day, but perhaps not really a surprise in early February (especially given recent weather conditions).
Gary Chambers (NoPinz) takes the honours with 48:24, just 20 seconds ahead of Chris McNamara (Nuun-Sigma Sport RT). Chris does take first place in the Vets on Standard. Last year's winner Pat Wright (Paceline RT) finishes in third place this time. Ria Woodfield (Kingston Wheelers) is the ladies winner, and Matt Williams (Abellio SFA RT) is the junior winner. The host club take the team honours through Stuart Bettis, Gary Brind and Paul Barnard. One advantage of being a very early season event was that it received a double page spread in Cycling Weekly. |
