TIME TRIAL RESULTS - 2016
Sunday 30 October 2016
|
The final event of the season. This one proved what we all know anyway. Hill climbing is a young man's sport. There was only one 'vet' in the top 14 places and he is a mere 43 years old.
Robin Dickie of the University of Manchester CC was the clear winner, with the promoting club gaining honours via Jason Blenkarn's second place. Tamar Vanderhaas of Lewes Wanderers excelled. As well as taking the ladies prize she also broke the ladies' event and course record. Preston Park Youth CC dominated the junior rankings. |
Sunday 23 October 2016
|
Colin Ward of Essex Roads CC repeats his win of last season, although this was not spotted until the evening. Second placed Pete Tadros (In Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) had initially been awarded the win by virtue of a time error (one minute in his favour).
Pete did however have the consolation of seeing his son Theo produce a devastating ride in the junior competition. His time of 58:20 would have placed him fourteenth in the seniors. Ruth Summerford of Velopace won the womens event. In Gear were the team winners |

A new event on a new course. Details of the event are here.
Report from Kim Washington: The inaugural Velopace Butts Lane Hill Climb turned out to be a superb event. The weather remained dry for the duration of the race which carried all the hallmarks of a classic event in the making. Cheered on by the spectators and encouraged by our MC at the half way point, the riders tackled the climb with great form and determination. It’s safe to say that this event is now firmly part of the annual hill climb racing calendar. With a highly competitive race between the fastest hill climbers, the course record has been established by 1st placed Rowan Brackston of Imperial College Cycling Club with a storming time of 3m38s. Close behind was 2nd placed hill climbing legend Bill Bell with a 3m42s ride and local climbing hero Peter Tadros with 3m49s to take 3rd place. Peter’s 14 year-old son Theo took 8th overall and fastest Juvenile with 4m23s. Fastest lady Joscelin Lowden was 12th overall with a stunning 4m35s climb. Congratulations also to Nick Martin, fastest junior with 4m7s which put him 7th overall. The fastest team award goes to local club Eastbourne Rovers, establishing Matt Woods, David Clark and Bob Humphrey as their Butts Lane champions. Well done to all riders and we look forward to seeing you again next year. |

|
Some remarkable times today as some unfamiliar names arrive to test their undoubted hill climbing prowess. James Hayward of Woolwich CC is the fastest of them all, ahead of Rowan Brackston (Imperial College Cycling Club) and Issac Munday (Oxford University CC).
Joscelin Lowden of Lewes Wanderers CC keeps the 'locals' represented by winning the wonens event, and Southborough & District Wheelers take the team prize. |
Sunday 9 October 2016
|
Tom Pritchard of Hampshire Road Club and Alex Napier of Blazing Saddles are the top ranked SCA affiliated riders as they finish behind James Copeland of Fareham Wheelers. David Shepherd of GS Stella also does well and is fifth.
Sarah Matthews of ...a3crg is the first placed SCA affiliated female rider. |

There were truly appalling conditions for the riders in this event. The weather, both before and during the event, varied between hard rain and absolute torrential cloudbursts. Many of the riders were huddled in a bus shelter near the start line in a vain attempt to dodge the worst of it. The course itself became a raging torrent with flash flooding and debris. Warming up was an interesting concept with riders becoming soaked and chilled even before they had started.
Given the circumstances there were some impressive performances. Richard Cartland improved his time and his third place of last season to claim the overall win. Gareth Thyer (BGrighton Mitre CC) also improved his time and won the SCA Championship. Once again Nick Martin (East Grinstead CC) and Tamar Vanderhaas (Lewes Wanderers CC) won their respective categories. John McGrath claimed the vets title and led his club Worthing Excelsior to the team award. |

The best laid plans and all that..... A last minute course change to avoid the Tough Mudder traffic further up the course meant a shortened 22.5 mile 3 loop course turning early at Faygate. Well done to everybody for managing the situation on the day.
James Boyman of Farnham RC won with a superb speed over well over 30 mph. He finished ahead of Par Wright (Paceline RT) and Simon McNamara (South Downs Bikes). Mel Wasley was the fastest female competitor, and the promoting club Epsom CC took the team prize. The Norwood Paragon pairing of James Stuart and Chris Holmes won a well contested 2 Up TTT event. |

Despite it being a trick day with a strong wind Chris McNamara (Nuun-Sigma Sport-London RT) set a new event record as he stormed to a win ahead of Rob Sharland (Paceline RT) and Conall Yates (IGQVTSRT).
The fast-developing Christopher Filewood (Oxted CC) took another junior win whilst Katie Crowe (Dulwich Paragon CC) was the quickest female competitor. A sad note was the absence of Tim Stevens on his road bike. He is missed by so many; a truly iconic cyclist. |
Conall Yates of In-Grear Quickvit Trainsharp RT is the fastest rider on the day as he leads his club to the team prize (together with father and son combo Pete and Theo Tadros). Steve Dennis of East Grinstead finished in runners up spot.
Ruth Summerford of Velopace CC was once again the fastest lady and is enjoying a successful run. Also in a familiar comment Theo Tadros was the fastest junior. |
Pete Tadros of In-Grear Quickvit Trainsharp RT wins again, this time with 20:38. Mark Emsley (Team ASL360) was second ahead of two riders in joint third place being Nick Malins and Matthew Woods.
Ruth Summerford of Velopace CC was the fastest lady; Theo Tadros was the fastest junior, and Eastbourne Rovers CC took the team prize. |
Saturday 10 September 2016
|
A tricky day with the early riders having to contend with slippery road conditions and the later riders facing increasing wind speeds.
In a continuation of an excellent season James Rix of Crawley Wheelers notched another win with a fine 52:39, more than a minute ahead of Steve Dennis (East Grinstead CC) and Matt Peel (Redhill CC). Crawley Wheelers also took the team prize with Paul Byford and Robert Zietal providing the supporting rides. Ruth Summerford of Velopace CC went well inside the hour with a 58:49 to take the ladies award. Another rider having an excellent season and going faster than ever is Alan Robinson of Central Sussex CC. He took the win in the vets on standard category. |

Monday 29 August 2016
|
James Rix of Crawley Wheelers wins well and smashes the 5 year old veterans course record held by Steve Dennis by 40 seconds. Simon McNamara (South Downs Bikes) and Alex Napier (Blazing Saddles) complete a very fine quality podium.
Brighton Mitre do well with Sarah Phelps winning the womens' category and they take the prize for fastest team. David Eccles of Redmon CC won the Hub Gear event. |
Sunday 28 August 2016
|
Fareham Wheelers put out a strong set of riders for this event and Gary Chambers is the fastest on the day. Laura Bartlett of ...a3crg is the fastest lady rider.
And there was some slight confusion in the CTT system as the tandem pairing of Dave Abbott and Jon Frost was listed as one rider (Dave) so the results shown here correct that anomaly and list them separately. |
Saturday 27 August 2016
|
27 degrees, humid but very little wind but nevertheless James Boyman’s 20:57 on a bumpy course is just quite astounding. He finished first with second finisher across the line being Brighton Mitre’s Sarah Phelps who took 39 seconds off the womens’ 6 years old course record, with 27:10.
Alex Napier was close behind in second place, and in doing so took a single second of the 4 year old veterans' course record held by Steve Dennis. Mike Coyle was third in 22:51, leading the Mitre’s winning team of himself, Sarah Phelps and the promoter Robin Johnson. |

Not strictly speaking a Sussex event - although one of our affiliated clubs ...a3crg were hugely involved in helping to put on this very popular promotion which had a full entry of 150 riders.
Good conditions and a fine course meant that there were many who went home very happy with their times on the day. The first five riders did 18:xx and the next sixteen all went inside the 20 minute mark. Rob Sharland of Paceline RT was the overall winner, and Matthew Downie of Eden Veranda Racing won the Road Bikes event. Kevin Tye was the fastest vet on standard. Paceline RT took the team prize in the main event whilst the promoting club Utag did the same in the road bike category. |

Paceline RT dominate this event with the top two riders plus two more in the top eight positions. There are no prizes for guessing who won the team prize.
Although this was classified as a 'preference to women' event there were just ten women riders. Kate Allen of Drag2Zero took the first prize with a time that was good enough to place her in 13th place overall. |

The open ten was won by Chris McNamara with a time just outside the course record, taking the event and vets prize. Fastest lady was Tamar Vanderhaas the junior winner was another VC Londres rider with a cracking new PB of 22:12. The team award went to the Sussex Nomads taking a well-deserved win.
The GHS heat provided a close competition for qualifying places. Also some big improvements were visible from the riders who also rode last year demonstrating a clear indication of progression and dedication to the sport. Lewis Winfield VC Londres put in a PB to win in 22:07 despite being slowed at the start by traffic. The younger age cat winners all going to the Preston Park Youth cycling team and VC Jubilee taking the team prize. |
High gusting winds, lashing rain and extremely slippery road surfaces made this more of a challenge than one would ideally want. 13 riders didn't finish and 12 didn't start.
In the circumstances the winning ride was truly jaw dropping. Alex Napier of Blazing Saddles recorded a stunning 3:46:48. This was nearly 6 minutes ahead of Pete Morris (Team ASL360). Peter Pav Bryan was the other podium finisher. Pip Jenkins of Southborough & District Wheelers was the fastest lady, and Eastbourne Rovers CC were the fastest team. Alex Napier made it a double by also being the fastest veteran on standard. |

A mid-week Open event (restricted to 60 riders) on a fast course in benign weather attracted a quality field. This is reflected in the times where no fewer than six riders went inside the 20 minute mark.
Fareham Wheelers demonstrated their strength with James Copeland taking the win and Gary Chambers finishing in third place. Alex Napier of the similarly strong Blazing Saddles was the rider to split them. Elize Sherwell of Blazing Saddles picked up the ladies' award as fastest rider. |

Sunday 3 July 2016

A remarkable performance by the fastest rider of the day. Not only was it a stunning time but he suffered the double problem of crashing in his warm up on the road due to avoiding a rabbit and hitting a pothole as well as then being 20 seconds late for his start. Well done indeed to Jonathan Parker of Team Bottrill as he beats the 1:50:00 standard.
Steve Dennis of East Grinstead in second place took the SCA 50 Championship, repeating his 2012 success. Tamar Vanderhaas of Lewes Wanderers is ladies champion, repeating her 2014 success. Mike O'Gorman of Worthing Excelsior CC retains his veterans title. Jack Churchill, in his first event at this distance, takes the juveniles award. Steve Dennis has now won the Association 50 cup a record 13 time. Tamar Vanderhaas set a new SCA 50 miles record, beating last year's record set by Sarah Matthews of ...a3crg. Jack Churchill sets the first SCA Record for the fastest Juvenile at 50 miles. Mike O’Gorman sets a new SCA Record for the fastest Vet on CTT Target Times |
An excellent time of 1:52:12 sees Mark Smith of Crawley Wheelers secure a hatful of prizes as fastest rider, fastest SCCU rider and part of the victorious Crawley Wheelers team (with Brindley Taylor and Robert Zietal)
Alys Mathews of Claphma Chasers is the ladies winner, whilst Gary Brind of South Downs Bikes wins the Tagnini Cup for the fastest debut at the distance - a very impressive 1:57:54. |

A cracking ride by Pete Tadros (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp RT) as he storms to victory by nearly 2 minutes. Ben Elliott (Paceline RT) and Mark Smith (Crawley Wheelers) are the best of the rest trailing in his wake.
Sophie Colman (Drops Cycling Team) managed to get lost at the very first roundabout, simply doing a U turn and arriving back at the start. This was to prove costly and Julia Hawksworth (Southborough & District Wheelers) took the prize as fastest lady just 23 seconds ahead of Sophie. One really impressive ride was by Christopher Filewood (Oxted CC) with his superb 56:50 netting him the junior prize, and actually placing him 23rd overall. In-Gear took the team prize and their Dave Pollard took the vets main prize as his teammate Pete already had the big one. |
A one-two for the McNamara brothers as Chris (riding this time for South Downs Bikes / Casco) takes the win from his brother Simon. Mark Smith of Crawley Wheelers is close behind in third place. South Downs Bikes are the team winners.
Tamar Vanderhaas (Lewes Wanderers CC) takes the ladies prize, and Alan Robinson (Central Sussex CC) wins the vets. |

Pat Wright of Paceline RT is quickest, with Katie Crowe of Dulwich Paragon CC taking the ladies prize. |

Tough Windy conditions today. That doesn't stop John Dewey (Team Bottrill) notching yet another win with a fine 20:05, ahead of joint second placed Robert Moore (Nuun-Sigma Sport-London RT) and Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC).
Another rider in form, Mel Wasey (SSLL) wins the womens' award, whilst junior Samuel Wadsley (Poole Wheelers) records a superb 21:44 to take the junior prize. |
|
The course was made extremely tricky by a damp surface combined with a liberal dousing of diesel. This didn't deter Elliott Porter (Neon Velo) who, in his first time trial for a year, averaged 405 watts to record a remarkable 51:01 and finish well ahead of the field.
Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) was a minute and a half further back, and Simon McNamara (South Downs Bikes) was third with 53:00. |

The course length was the same as last year (and not 29.9 miles) due to lengthy ongoing bridge repairs still not having been completed.
John Dewey was a non-starter but let that take nothing away from a sub-hour time of 59:42 by a very in-form Rob Sharland. A truly awesome performance that impressed all. His Paceline RT teammate Pat Wright was only just outside the hour mark, with Liam Maybank finishing in third place Mel Wasey (SSLL Racing Team) took the ladies prize with 1:10:19, some 26 seconds ahead of Alice (Starley Racing) |
Sunday 6 March 2016

Due to roadworks in Handcross riders were spared the usual gruelling start up the hill from Staplefield. The course was shortened by situating the start point on the A23 slip road (the usual Crawley Wheelers 41 start point). However they were not spared the arctic conditions with temperatures at around 0 to 2 degrees.
Chris McNamara of Nuun-Sigma Sport London RT headed the field with a fine 49:34. He was ahead of Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC) with 51:04 and twin brother Simon McNamara (South Downs Bikes) at 51:05. South Downs Bikes (Simon, Kevin Plummer and Richard Cartland) won the team prize thanks in part to a Crawley Wheelers rider going off course. Helen Webb of Sussex Nomads took the ladies prize with 1:08:49. Helen benefited in similar fashion as her only rival also went off course. Geoff Smith of Eastbourne Rovers CC won the vets on standard. |

John Dewey of newly-formed Team Bottrill wins this tough event on a chill windy day. The host club gained their reward as Simone Bailey was the fastest lady (26:43). Matthew Buckley of Andover Wheelers won the Road Bikes Event, with Seb Ader being the fastest Sussex based rider and Andy Langdown (newly transferred to Blazing Saddles) close behind him. |

Bad luck so early in the season. Note from promoter:
EVENT CANCELLED As mentioned above we have had to cancel the event. The road closures down through Walliswood left us a few alternate routes but one option had two-way traffic lights and the only alternate route had traffic lights on due to be removed the day before which were a risk. The CTT decided no safe alternate route could be found and recommended cancellation. Apologies to all competitors. |

Pat Wright heads Pete Tadros and Chris McNamara in cold savage windy conditions with gusts up to 50 mph.
Much of the pre-race speculation was about the battle between old adversaries Pete and Chris, but it was the 31 year old Paceline RT rider who took the honours. He rode in only 6 time trials last season and used a road bike in all of them. Pete Morris was the fastest on a road bike today, and his ASL360 team took the team prize. |
