Redhill CC's Rupert Burbidge wins an incident filled SCA 50.
On a windy and overcast morning, Rupert Burbidge claimed the top spot with an excellent 1:56:48, 36 seconds clear of Dominic Hill of Bec CC. Lewes' Tom Glandfield was third with 1:59:16, which made him the fastest Sussex rider.Last year's winner, Dave Shepherd unfortunately punctured. The estimated 5 minutes if took to repair may very well been enough to have claimed the top spot but as it was Shepherd had to settle for 8th overall. Another man in the wars was 2nd place man from last year, James Ryan. He had a problem when his front wheel became misaligned at the start, costing him over four minutes. On a happier and uneventful note, Mel Roberton set a new SCA Vets on standard record with his 7th overall placing time of 2:02:42. This gave him an fantastic plus of 39:55, nearly 6 minutes more than a3crg's evergreen Ben Fielden. Helen Millier of Lewes retained her Ladies title with 2:25:54, narrowly fending off Lucy Ashdown-Parkes of Addiscombe CC (2:26:14). 3rd lady was Fiona Lawrence of Shorter Rochford CC with 2:30:41. For the 3rd year on the trot and continuing his excellent season thus far, Worthing Excelsior's Kevin Doe had the best line 3 improvement of 2:15 (2:13:59 actual). In the Team Awards, the Lewes trio of seniors, Tom Glandfield, Jamie Lowden and James Ryan claimed the top spot with a combined 6:11:05. 2nd place were Worthing, comprising the Vets, Mel, Jeremy Wootton and Mark Benhardt who recorded 6:12:03. |

"Dennis wins, but wind is a problem!" Is an old quote from Andy Seltzer but one that was true with strong winds blowing across most of the country over the weekend.
Dennis' winning time of 1:35:07 was 2:09 clear of 2nd place man Rob Pelham, but over 2 minutes slower than his 2010 winning time. James Goward now riding for Team Scott Plasma improved on his 2010 position to take 3rd and Niall Digby of La Fuga Sigma Sport was 4th, again improving on his 2010 position. The Lewes trio of Pelham, Morris and Midgley took the team prize for the 2nd year running and Ben Fielden of a3crg moved up one spot in the Highest Plus on Std to share 1st place with Dennis with +24:09. |

Pete Tadros and In-Gear top the SCA 25 tables. In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp's Pete Tadros claimed the top spot on Sunday's Championship 25, edging out both Steve Dennis and Nick Dwyer. Tadros' 52:16 was 31 seconds clear of 2nd place man Steve Dennis (52:47) who in turn was 1:13 ahead of 3rd place Nick Dwyer (54:00). Darren Barclay of Arctic Premier RT was 4th with 54:13, just pipping Ian Brogden of Eastbourne Rovers (54:32).
In the team competition the In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp trio of Tadros, Will Mangar and Dave Pollard added to their 10 win to claim the fastest team of 3, with the Lewes Wanderers crew of Dwyer, Rob Pelham and Tom Glandfield having to settle for the second spot. Mel Roberton’s excellent 59:08 actual time comfortably gave him the Vets competition with +19:12. Second place went to a3crg’s Ben Fielden on +18:18 and Harry Featherstone was third with +17:30. Tamar Vanderhaas of Brighton Mitre added to her weekend haul by claiming the Ladies again with 1:8:43, whilst her partner Sholto Haggart bagged the closest to the hour prize with 59:59. Nick Dwyer tops the charts with a new Course Record on the SCA Championship 10.
With the closest of winning margins, Nick Dwyer claims the Sussex CA 10 for the second year running. Not only that but he also adds another course record to his haul, improving on Felix English’s 2010 record by one second to win with 20:19.In-Gear's Pete Tadros was 2nd with 20:21 with Darren Barclay of Arctic Premier RT 3rd (20:45), Will Mangar 4th on 21:02 and Iain Brogden of Eastbourne Rovers 5th with 21:14. Looking back on last year’s results, everyone looks to have upped their game this year which is great for the championship prizes, the season long competition and for Sussex time trialling. Not to be outdone by the boys, Tamar Vanderhaas of Brighton Mitre claimed the Ladies prize with a massive 1:47 improvement on her 2010 time. Harry Featherstone and Mel Roberton repeated their 2010 positions on the Vets on Std and the In-Gear trio of Tadros, Mangar and Gifford pipped Lewes to the team prize with a combined time of 1:03:11. In the tandem event an unlucky puncture before the start saw the GS Stella pairing of Dave Abbot and Andy Smith incur a 4:50 penalty, allowing Redmon CC's Wendy and Jon Frost to claim the tandem prize with 25:47. |

Two new course records in 10 minutes with Lewes taking the trophy. Sunday witnessed a very close run event with forty pairs and two solos completing the 28.5 mile circuit around the Ashurst, Partridge Green, A24 area. A still morning greeted a bigger field than 2010 and featured an excellent turn out of juniors from VC Jubilee and ten pairs from A2Tri.
The Wanderers pair of Lowden and Frost set the initial benchmark for some time before fellow clubmates Ryan and Morris broke the 1:05 barrier. Their 1:04:49 was then smashed by the a3crg duo Seb Ader and Paddy Brennan who set a then course record 1:2:50, 2:08 faster than their 2010 1st place equalling time. This looked unbeatable until the final Lewes pair of Nick Dwyer and Rob Pelham stormed past the time keepers with a fantastic 1:02:28. Comparing results from 2010 it would be fair to say that people were up to 2 minutes quicker this time round with six pairs recording a 1:10:.. time. Last but certainly not least, a special mention must go to youngster Zak Corum Haines who completed the 12 mile circuit in 37:44. Event organiser Dave Abbott was pleased with the success of the event and MC Dave Collard Berry thanked everyone involved. |

His 3:51 was 6 seconds clear of 2nd place man and team mate Will Mangar. 3rd place went to Lewes Wanderers' Andy Comben who finished on 4:13.4.
Previously beaten by her on the SCA hill climb, Natasha Fuller got her revenge on Debbie Percival in the ladies prize battle by pipping her by just 0.6 seconds. Dan Gardner continued his good form to claim another junior prize, beating Joe Jenner of Hastings & St Leonards by nearly a minute. And finally, In Gear comfortably claimed the team prize with Gareth Elks joining Tadros and Mangar. |

In Gear and Will Manger dominate the opening SCA event of 2011. Unlike the almost biblical weather of the 2010 event, Sunday's race was held in almost balmy conditions. Granted the thermometer didn't get much above 5' C but it was pretty bright and not too windy, so almost perfect conditions for a Hard Riders event.
First on the road were Redmon CC pairing of Richard Hoskin and Chris Brewer, commendably out on a Tandem. They recorded 1:30:40 and received a special prize from SCA chairman Robin Johnson for their efforts. Dave Shepherd of GS Stella set the early pace with 55:45 before Will Manger stormed in with 52:26. Fellow In Gear team mate Conall Yates almost caught elder brother Sean to claim the second spot with an excellent 52:45. With Chris out in Grinstead colours and Mr & Mrs Yates spectating, it was very much a Yates family outing. Sean later said he was prevented from going faster by his heart pacemaker! 3rd spot went to event promoter Steve Dennis with 52:47 though it should be mentioned that Steve did in fact incur a 40 second late start. 2010 winner Niall Digby of Sigma Sport was 4th with 55:26 with Dave Shepherd 5th. Mel Roberton of Worthing Excelsior was 1st vet with an actual time of 59:27 to give him a plus of 7:55. |
